Day 2 : Coptic , Islamic and Khan el Khalili
Embark on a journey through time in Cairo's medieval district.
Begin your exploration with the Alabaster Mosque, a magnificent example of Ottoman architecture. Constructed by Muhammad Ali Pasha between 1830 and 1848 as a memorial to his eldest son, who tragically passed away in 1816, the mosque is primarily built from limestone, believed to have originated from the Pyramids of Giza.
Next, immerse yourself in the grandeur of the Sultan Hassan Mosque, a breathtaking masterpiece of Mamluk architecture. This impressive Islamic complex comprises a mosque and a madrassa, where students once studied the four schools of Islamic thought.
Later, venture into the Coptic quarter and discover the historic Ben Ezra Synagogue. Renowned for its Geniza, this temple holds a special significance, as it is believed to be built on the site where Moses was found by Pharaoh's daughter during his infancy.
Gaze upon the Hanging Church, perched above the gate of the ancient Babylon Fortress. Step inside this sacred edifice and marvel at the thirteen pillars that support its nave. Stroll along the vibrant El Moez Street, admiring the captivating blend of architectural styles – madrassas (Koran schools), mosques, and traditional houses. You will have the opportunity to visit one of these traditional homes, Bayt El Suheymi, and experience a glimpse into the past.
Continue your journey through the bustling streets of Khan El Khalili, a lively souk dating back to the 14th century. This bustling marketplace remains a favorite destination for locals seeking gold, spices, soap, and handcrafted souvenirs.
After a day filled with historical and cultural discoveries, you will be escorted back to your hotel for a restful night.
