Day 3 : Travel to Alexandria.
Following your breakfast, relax in an air-conditioned vehicle as you travel to Alexandria. Step into the intriguing Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, a Roman necropolis that blends Egyptian, Greek, and Roman funerary art. This ancient site, once considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World, showcases a collection of tombs, statues, and archaeological treasures.
Nearby, the towering Pompey Pillar stands as a testament to history. While its name might suggest a connection to the Roman general Pompey, it was actually erected in honor of Emperor Diocletian in 291 AD. This monolithic pillar, crafted from a single piece of red Aswan granite, reaches a height of 26.85 meters. It rests upon the ruins of the Temple of Serapis, dedicated to the Egyptian-Greek god who was the protector of Alexandria.
Adjacent to the Pillar, you'll find a sphinx built in tribute to Serapis. Next, your journey takes you to Saint Catherine Church. As you stand before this religious edifice, observe the details of its neo-baroque architecture. Once inside, marvel at the way sunlight floods the building, highlighting its grandeur.
According to Christian tradition, Saint Catherine was a young princess and scholar who converted to Christianity at the age of 14, inspiring hundreds of pagans to follow her faith. After enduring torture and imprisonment, she was executed by Emperor Maxentius, earning her the title of martyr.
Explore the Alexandria National Museum, where three primary collections narrate the captivating history of this ancient cosmopolitan city.
Discover Qaitbay Citadel, a legacy of the Mamluk Dynasty built on the remnants of the once-famous Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Erected in 1477 by Sultan Ashram Sayf El-Din Quit Bay, the citadel exemplifies Mamluk military architecture.
This fortress was strategically built to safeguard Alexandria from Ottoman invasion. Conclude your day with a leisurely stroll along the corniche, traversing Stanley Bridge and relishing an unparalleled view of the glistening sea.
As night descends, the bridge illuminates beautifully, casting shimmering reflections on the water below.
