Pyramids

Overview

The pyramids of Egypt are among the most iconic and enduring symbols of ancient civilization, representing the pinnacle of Egyptian architectural and engineering prowess. Built as monumental tombs for the pharaohs, the pyramids were designed to safeguard the body and treasures of the deceased ruler, ensuring their passage to the afterlife. The most famous of these is the Great Pyramid of Giza, constructed for Pharaoh Khufu around 2580-2560 BC. Standing as the largest and only surviving wonder of the ancient world, it remains a testament to the ingenuity and ambition of ancient Egypt.

Alongside Khufu’s pyramid are the pyramids of Pharaohs Khafre and Menkaure, each with its own unique features, including the Great Sphinx, a massive limestone statue guarding the Giza Plateau. While Giza’s pyramids are the most well-known, Egypt is home to many other pyramid complexes, including those at Saqqara, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the oldest known pyramid, stands.
