Overview
The Saqqara Pyramids, located in the vast necropolis of Saqqara, just outside of Cairo, are among Egypt’s most historically significant ancient structures. The most famous of these is the Step Pyramid of Djoser, built during the 27th century BC for Pharaoh Djoser by his architect Imhotep. This pyramid, considered the world’s first large-scale stone structure, marks a critical turning point in ancient Egyptian architecture, transitioning from traditional flat-roofed mastaba tombs to the grand pyramids.
The Step Pyramid stands at 60 meters tall and is composed of six distinct steps, showcasing early innovations in pyramid design. Beyond Djoser’s pyramid, Saqqara is home to a variety of other important structures, including the Pyramid of Teti, the Pyramid of Unas, and numerous mastabas, which offer rich inscriptions and artistic depictions of ancient Egyptian life and religious beliefs.
